Trail Safety & Etiquette

Important guidelines for responsible trail riding and preserving our MTB community.

Ride Responsibly

Important guidelines for responsible trail riding:

  • Respect land access and private property
  • Ride on the trail, stop off the trail
  • Choose trails within your capability; riding around features can cause damage and collisions
  • Leave no trace and pack out what you pack in (trail builders too!)
  • Don't modify trails you are not responsible for
  • Be courteous: no one has right-of-way on dual-direction / multi-use trails
  • If you don't need to pedal it, it's not a bicycle (except purpose-built adaptive MTBs)

Unsanctioned Trail Areas

Important information about unofficial trails and responsible riding practices.

Enjoy Responsibly

There are many unsanctioned trails out there, and it's important to treat them and the land they are on with respect.

  • MTBers in WA are given a lot of freedom by the government bodies that manage the land, but each individual person acting irresponsibly puts that freedom at risk. It's essential to appreciate the access we're given without pushing too far.
  • Major Unsanctioned Areas:
  • These may include some of the best trails WA has to offer, but we strongly advise against exploring these after you have heard about them or discovered them online. Find someone to guide you, don't get out of your depth, and know how to respect the wishes of those responsible for trails and the land they're on.
  • Other trail users (hikers, trail runners, equestrians, etc.) may use these trails without knowing they were built for mountain biking - be courteous, say hello, and inform them without causing conflict.
  • Trail builders should ensure they understand the golden trail building rules of water management and rider management, not bring in any external materials, and realise that all work is illegal if you do not have permission from the land manager.
